POOL LAUNCHES TILE BY TILE ON KICKSTARTER

+POOL-12

New York, June 12, 2013 – Since designers Dong-Ping Wong, Archie Lee Coates IV and Jeff Franklin launched their first Kickstarter campaign for + POOL in 2011, the project has become a new model for funding large-scale civic projects. Now with Tile By Tile, the supporters, backers and collaborators that are making + POOL possible have the opportunity to claim a piece of the pool for themselves. The + POOL team has broken down the massive capital project into a bite-sized component: the tile. The deck, walls and floor of + POOL, which is slated for a 2016 opening, will be made of 70,000 pool tiles. If every one of these tiles is claimed, it will fund the entire $15 million construction budget of + POOL from front to back, making it the largest kickstarted civic project to date. The typical + POOL tile is available for $199 and can be engraved with a name or message up to 50 characters. The tile will be sent to backers this summer with a replica placed on the future + POOL, permanently etching backers names on the world’s first water-filtering floating pool.

If the first 1,400 tiles are reserved on Kickstarter, and the goal of $250,000 is reached, the team will be able to build a mini, temporary and floating science-lab version of the + POOL, called Float Lab. Float Lab will allow the team and their partners to test all the filtration materials in real river conditions in the East River this August, making it one of the most comprehensive studies on the river’s water quality to date. The milestone is essential in getting + POOL closer to the water.
